x Sensoria Food & Wine

Fifteen of Charlotte’s finest chefs will provide a locally-sourced dish – paired with a North Carolina wine.

There will also be a separate area where international wines will be sampled – courtesy of Worldly Wines.

The Classes

You are free to use the entire afternoon exploring all the food and wine offerings of the day, or you can additionally choose to attend one or two of these six value-added classes (class sizes limited):

12:30-1:30pm
Challenges and Champions
How NC wineries overcome some of the world’s most challenging growing conditions to make award winning wines.

Why Doesn’t Beer Get More Respect?
Wine gets respect, food gets respect, but beer doesn’t get its due respect. Enjoy this interactive tasting session where we will talk & taste a range of beer styles, their history and traditions and see how we can close the the gap between the culinary world and the craft beer world.

1:45-2:45pm
Fortified Wines
Explore the amazing world of fortified wines. These under-appreciated wines have it a rich and interesting history, lots of character, and big flavor. In this fun and engaging session, you’ll learn their stories, and will taste some of these delicious wines.

Regaining Respect for Merlot
Merlot was over-planted in many wine growing regions in the 80’s and 90’s, as it is easy to grow. However, it was a cash crop and not a lot of care was put into the production of the wine, plenty of it and inexpensive. In the past 10 years, many winemakers have taken a more serious approach to producing merlot and giving it the respect it deserves. We will taste five wines from five different regions and discuss the virtues of this noble grape.

3:00-4:00pm
Beyond Champagne
An interactive tasting of new wave sparkling wines from around the world…English Sparkling Wine anyone?

Food and Wine Pairing 101
In this fun hands-on, glass-full seminar you’ll unlock the inside secrets of pairing wine and food. Experience how finding a delicious pair can enhance your enjoyment of both the food and the wine as you explore the ways food and wine work (or don’t!) together.

Special Riedel VIP Package

1:30-3:00pm

In addition to having access to all the food, wine, and classes of the day, there will be a limited number of VIP tickets available (advance sales only) which will give you access to an exclusive in-depth tasting of four different wine varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay.

Each wine will be sampled in a Riedel glass, individually designed for that varietal. You will explore the relationship of how the shape of a glass contributes to the overall flavor and enjoyment of wine.

Riedel has been manufacturing quality glassware since 1756. The company is known worldwide for its craftsmanship and depth of research to create glassware to enhance the characteristics of specific wine varietals.

At the end of the class, you will receive box of the four crafted glasses featured in the class for you to enjoy at home. (A $120 value!)

Choosing this VIP package replaces your options in the 1:45-2:45 session.

This is just one event of Sensoria: A Celebration of Literature & The Arts April 5-14 at Central Piedmont Community College. The Food & Wine Festival is made possible, in part, by generous sponsorships from Springer Mountain Farms and Members Foodservice. Proceeds from this event will be used to provide culinary scholarships to the next generation of chefs and food artisans.
